Founded in 2015, Mielelani Consultancy is a proudly South African environmental consulting company. Our name was derived from the Tshivenda word "Mielelani" meaning "flowing water" and also inspired by the indigenous "Muelela (Albizia Adianthifolia)" tree – symbolizing growth, resilience, and sustainability.

We specialize in providing multidisciplinary environmental services across sectors such as mining, waste management, agriculture, manufacturing, energy, construction, and environmental planning and management.

Our Services

Mielelani Consultancy is a professional environmental consulting firm in South Africa, providing specialised support for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Water Use Licence Applications (WULA), mining and prospecting rights applications, waste management licensing, environmental compliance audits, and ongoing environmental monitoring. Water Use License Application (WULA)

Expert assistance with Water Use License Applications in terms of the National Water Act of 1998.

Our WULA consulting services support developments affecting water resources, including abstraction, storage, watercourse crossings and regulated water uses in accordance with the National Water Act.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

Comprehensive EIA services in terms NEMA and the EIA Regulations of 2014 as amended.

We assist with undertaking of the EIA Process for activites listed in terms of the EIA Regulations, including Baasic Assessment Reporting Process, Screening and EIR, specialists coordination where required and public participation process.

Waste Management Licences (WML)

Assistance with Waste Management License Applications and associated integrated water, waste & environmental management plans.

Our WML support covers listed waste management activities, licensing documentation and compliance planning, including integrated waste management requirements and supporting environmental inputs where applicable.

Environmental Compliance Monitoring & Auditing

Undertaking of ECO Services for active construction sites and operating facilties. The service include annual compliance audits as per the requirements of site EA / WUL / WML.

We provide site compliance monitoring and auditing against EA/WUL/WML conditions, with practical corrective actions, evidence tracking, and reporting to keep projects legally compliant and inspection-ready. Our ECO services including annual performance assessment and financial provision reviews.

MPRDA Applications

Expert assistance with MPRDA Applications which includes prospecting rights, mining permits, mining rights, and MPRDA Section 102 & Section 53.

We support mining rights / permits, prospecting rights and amendments applications with environmental and regulatory inputs, including lodging, coordination of required assessments, stakeholder engagement, and documentation aligned to project approvals and permitting processes.

Waste Collection

We provide waste collection service for safe disposal at registered landfill sites.

Our waste collection and specialist waste services support compliant handling, storage and transportation of waste streams in accordance with applicable environmental legislation. We provide advisory and operational support for general, hazardous and project-specific waste requirements, ensuring responsible waste management and regulatory compliance.

What triggers an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in South Africa?

An EIA is an environmental assessment process required for certain listed activities under NEMA. Depending on the listed acticities triggered a Basic Assessment (BA) process or a Scoping and Environmental Impact Reporting process may be undetaken. The trigger depends on the scope and location of the project.

When do I need a Water Use Licence Application (WULA)?

You may need a WULA when your project involves water uses defined in the National Water Act (such as taking water, storing water, impeding/diverting flow, or activities within or affecting a watercourse). The exact requirement depends on the water uses and authorisations available (GA/WUL).

What is a Waste Management Licence (WML) and when is it required?

A WML is required for certain waste management activities listed under the Waste Act. Requirements depend on the specific activity (e.g., storage, treatment, disposal) and the applicable listed category and thresholds.

Do mining and prospecting rights applications require environmental authorisations?

Yes. Mining and prospecting activities typically trigger environmental requirements under the relevant legal framework and require environmental assessment and authorisation processes, including public participation and specialist inputs.
